Is Your Industrial Data Ready for AI? A Step-by-Step Path from Data to Machine Learning

Many industrial organizations want to use AI and machine learning, but the real question comes first: is the operational data ready? Our latest video shows a step-by-step way to answer that and turn existing plant data into smarter decisions.

1. Start with business value

Every initiative should start with a clear business objective. From there, define the use case, the KPIs and the value you expect, so the work delivers real impact and doesn't stay a technology experiment.

2. Understand the existing environment

Map how data flows through your systems and interfaces today: from the DCS/PLC, to the historian, to PI AF or a database, and finally to user dashboards.

3. Assess data foundation and quality

Reliable analytics depends on reliable data. Check availability, completeness, timestamps, bad or missing data, and context/metadata.

4. Move forward through three readiness gates

  • Gate 01 – Dashboard Ready: data is available, quality is acceptable, asset context is in place and KPIs are defined. This gives real-time and historical operational visibility.
  • Gate 02 – Analytics Ready: historical data is contextualized, consistent and ready for calculations. This enables performance monitoring, trend analysis, event analysis and asset analytics.
  • Gate 03 – ML Ready: training data, events/labels, infrastructure and security are all in place. Historical data can then go through feature engineering into ML models for anomaly detection and prediction.

5. Measure readiness and close the gaps

A readiness assessment scores eight areas: Business & Use Case, Architecture, Historian & Data Access, Data Quality & Foundation, Dashboard & Analytics, Machine Learning, Infrastructure & Security, and People & Process. Each area is rated Ready, Partial or Gap. A gap analysis then turns the findings into actions, for example:

  • improving data collection where data is missing
  • collecting event and failure data so ML models can be trained
  • upgrading servers when computing capacity is too low
  • configuring OT/DMZ access to resolve security limitations

6. Follow a phased roadmap

  1. Foundations (0–3 months): data and infrastructure
  2. Dashboard (3–6 months): operational visibility
  3. Analytics (6–12 months): advanced insight
  4. ML Pilot (12–16 months): predictive models
  5. Scale-Up (16+ months): operationalize and expand

Assess. Prioritize. Implement. Scale.

Going step by step, from dashboards to advanced analytics to machine learning, helps industrial operations become safer, achieve higher availability and get more value from the data they already have.
