Enterprise Data Foundation: Turning Scattered Plant Data into Faster Decisions
A modern plant generates data every second. The problem is that this data rarely lives in one place. The Enterprise Data Foundation from PT Scada Prima Cipta (SPC) brings real-time process data and quality data together in a single foundation, so operations and management teams work from the same numbers and can act faster.
The challenge: the data exists, but it is scattered
In many plants, each production area runs its own system. The polymerization process runs on HMIs and OPC servers for each line. The winding machines record speed and tension on separate servers. Quality test results are stored in a different database on the laboratory PCs.
As a result, a simple question like "why did Line 3 stop last night?" takes a long time to answer. Data has to be pulled from several systems and matched by hand in spreadsheets, often in different formats. By the time the answer arrives, the decision is already late.
The solution: one data foundation for the whole plant
The Enterprise Data Foundation is a data layer that sits between the production equipment and the business applications. It works in three steps:
- Consolidate. Data from every source, both OPC real-time and databases, is collected into a single point.
- Standardize. Tag names, units, and time formats are made consistent, so data from any line can be compared directly.
- Distribute. The clean data is sent to the historian for storage and to corporate applications for dashboards, reports, and analytics.
With this approach, each new application no longer needs its own connection to every machine. It simply takes its data from the foundation that is already in place.
What does the architecture look like?
The example here is a plant with seven production lines. It has three types of data source that originally ran independently:
- Polymerization process, from the HMI and OPC server on each line.
- Winder, from OPC servers that record speed and tension.
- Quality control, from MariaDB databases on the laboratory PCs.
Enterprise Data Foundation architecture · 3 sources, 1 consolidation point, 2 destinations
All three feed into a PLC Concentrator based on Rockwell ControlLogix, with OPC Data Exchange and Cogent DataHub as the connectors. This is where the data is collected and standardized. From there, it is distributed to the historian for storage and to the corporate layer for dashboards, reports, and analytics.
From data to dashboards people actually use
Once the foundation is in place, building dashboards becomes fast. In the examples below, every dashboard is built with Grafana Open Source, a free visualization platform that supports alerting and multi-source data integration. The views are layered: they start with a plant-wide summary and let users drill down to a single position and a single extruder.
This approach gives everyone a view that fits their role. Managers see the summary, supervisors see line status, and process engineers can dig down to the details.
Business benefits
- Integrated data. One point for all production and quality data, with no more matching spreadsheets by hand.
- Greater efficiency. Integration and new analytics are delivered much faster because the data is ready to use.
- Consistent data. Every department reads the same numbers, which leads to more accurate decisions.
- Faster response. The status of every line is visible in real time, so disruptions can be handled before they spread.
- Ready to grow. The same foundation supports advanced analytics, such as quality prediction and process optimization.
Start with a strong foundation
A dashboard is only as good as the data behind it. That is why SPC starts every digitalization project with the data foundation, then builds the applications on top of it.
As an AVEVA and Schneider Electric system integrator partner, SPC has experience delivering OPC integration, historians, and process analytics across Indonesia's oil and gas, geothermal, power generation, and manufacturing sectors.
